Our Child Psychiatry provides services for psychological problems in children like anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, bedwetting, etc. Child Psychiatry offers comprehensive services to address a wide range of psychological and behavioural issues that affect children and adolescents. These services are designed to diagnose and treat conditions that impact emotional well-being, social interaction, and overall development.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Anxiety Disorders: These can manifest as excessive worry, fears, and phobias that interfere with daily life.
  • Depression: Symptoms may include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep and appetite, and feelings of hopelessness.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): This encompasses a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social communication, repetitive behaviours, and restricted interests.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): This disorder involves difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  • Learning Disorders: These can affect a child’s ability to read, write, or perform mathematical calculations.
  • Bedwetting (Enuresis): This involves involuntary urination during sleep in children who are old enough to have achieved bladder control.

Treatment approaches may include:

  • Individual Therapy: The child meets one-on-one with a therapist to address their specific concerns.
  • Family Therapy: The entire family participates in therapy sessions to improve communication and support the child’s treatment.
  • Group Therapy: The child interacts with other children who have similar challenges, providing a supportive environment to learn and practice new skills.
  • Medication Management: In some cases, medication may be used to manage symptoms of certain conditions.
  • Psychoeducation: This involves providing information and support to children and families to help them understand and manage their condition.

Child Psychiatry Services

Anxiety disorders in children are to be treated early to avoid an adverse effect on performance in academics and their social development. Fear and anxiety are the two main factors which drag children from success.

Short temper, stubborn behaviour in children may be indicators of a depressive illness in them. Children may appear to be sad, with a decline in academic performance, deterioration in self-care and detachment from parents and peers are other indicators.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a  neuro-developmental disorder which usually presents in early childhood. It is characterised by the presence of poor social reciprocation, delayed speech development and stereotypic movements. If intervened at an earlier age, with a multidisciplinary team comprising of a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, etc, the results could be very reassuring.

Characterised by the presence of hyperactivity and inattention and impulsive behaviors. Around 70 % of children having ADHD, could also have associated learning problems like dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. If untreated, it could progress to behavioural problems like Oppositional defiance and Conduct problems and a risk for early onset substance abuse.
